This weekend features the debut of Nuremberg, a film starring Russell Crowe as Nazi leader Hermann Göring, and Rami Malek as Douglas Kelley, the psychiatrist who analyzed him. This weekend also sees the premiere of Death by Lightning on Netflix, a miniseries that examines the life of U.S. Pres. James Garfield—as well as that of his assassin, Charles Guiteau—while Guillermo del Toro’s take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein also debuts on the platform.

Pelosi announces retirement

Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to lead a party in Congress and the first to become speaker of the House of Representatives, has announced that she will not seek reelection when her term ends in 2027, capping one of the most consequential political careers in recent U.S. history. Pelosi, whose career in the U.S. House of Representatives began in 1987, was named speaker in 2007 and served in that post twice, from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Among her crowning achievements, Pelosi played an instrumental role in the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as well as economic legislation such as the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

The success of governors-elect Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger in Virginia this past week highlights an increasingly influential group of women politicians with military backgrounds. Because much of military service was closed off to women until the latter part of the 20th century, those in this group—which includes Senators Tammy Duckworth, Joni Ernst and Elissa Slotkin, Representative Nancy Mace, and director of national security Tulsi Gabbard—are considered young by American political standards, heralding a new generation of leaders on both sides of the aisle.
